Sent crypto on the wrong network or without a memo? Recovery rules at 14 exchanges and how to avoid it
Wrong-network USDT or a missing XRP memo? Recovery fees, minimums and times at Binance, OKX, Bybit and 11 more exchanges, plus a pre-send checklist.
Sending crypto on the wrong network or without a memo is often recoverable, but only if the receiving exchange supports that network and that token. Expect a fee and a wait of days to months. I pulled the recovery rules 14 exchanges publish in their official help centers into one table, followed by a checklist to run before you send.
The four common mistakes
1. Right token, wrong network
One token such as USDT runs on several chains; WEEX's help page lists ERC20, TRC20 and BEP20. EVM chains like Ethereum and BNB Chain use the same address format, and MetaMask's documentation notes that you may have the same address on every network while your assets and transactions stay specific to each one. Send BEP-20 USDT to an address that only accepts ERC-20 deposits and the transfer goes through, but the exchange may never credit it. Binance states that assets deposited via an unsupported network might be lost and cannot be recovered.
2. Missing or wrong memo/tag
Coins such as BNB, XLM, XRP, ATOM and EOS need a memo (also called a tag) on top of the address. Binance defines the memo as a unique identifier assigned to each account to identify a deposit. With the right address and no memo, the exchange receives the coins but cannot tell which account they belong to.
3. Unsupported token, old contract or contract transfer
Even on the right network, a token the exchange has not listed, or one sent from a contract that has since been replaced, is not credited. KuCoin says deposits to the old contract address will not be credited. How you send matters too: Bybit and Bitget both say deposits sent from a smart contract, rather than directly from a wallet, may not be credited automatically, and Bybit says it does not support them at all for any coin other than ETH.
4. Suspended or delisted network
Exchanges suspend deposits on a chain from time to time. OKX says assets already recorded on-chain during a suspension are not lost and are processed once the network reopens. Gate says incoming transfers are not processed while a coin's deposits are suspended. KuCoin adds that a token closed for maintenance cannot go through self-recovery. Binance and KuCoin both list delisted tokens as a separate recovery case.
Official recovery rules at 14 exchanges
Everything below comes from each exchange's official help center, checked on 3 November 2026. "Not published" means I could not find it on an official page, not that no rule exists. Fees and times depend on the type of mistake; the table lists the main cases each exchange spells out.
| Exchange | Self-service | Fee | Minimum | Processing time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | Yes, Self-Service Recovery | Memo: the coin's network withdrawal fee; unsupported EVM network: 20 USDT; charged only on success | Memo: refused if the amount after fees is below the minimum withdrawal | 5 to 30 working days |
| OKX | Yes, Deposit Self-Service Tool, then support; unsupported networks or tokens are generally not refunded | Recovering a below-minimum deposit costs extra; amount not published | Not published | Not published |
| Bybit | Yes: Deposit Appeal for missing memos; Pending Asset page for unsupported coins | Memo: 5× the coin's withdrawal fee; Pending Asset: varies by coin, shown in the withdrawal window; manual recovery: US$200; non-refundable once charged | Memo: refused if the refund is below the minimum withdrawal; manual: value must exceed US$500 | Memo: 1 to 3 working days; manual: 3 to 5 working days for review, up to 7 to 14 working days overall |
| Bitget | Yes, Refund of uncredited deposit | Not published | Not published | Up to 10 working days |
| KuCoin | Yes, Crypto Deposit Not Credited | Memo: 40 USDT; unlisted token: 80 USDT; unsupported EVM network: 200 to 500 USDT | Not published | 2 to 3 days, up to 15 to 30 days |
| Gate | Yes, Token Recovery; Deposit Recovery for missing memos | Token Recovery: 20 USDT per recovery plus a network fee; Deposit Recovery: actual on-chain cost only, refunded if the return fails | Not published | Deposit Recovery: usually 7 business days; Token Recovery: not published |
| HTX | No, support form | Not published | Not published | Not published |
| MEXC | Yes, Uncredited Crypto Deposit form | Memo, unsupported token or network, deposit to a hot wallet: 20 USDT; prohibited token or network: varies with on-chain gas; supported but not credited: free | Equal to the minimum withdrawal | Review 1 to 2 days, processing 3 to 21 days |
| BingX | Yes, Deposit Not Credited | Set after review; amount not published | Not published | 7 to 15 working days |
| Bitfinex | No, contact support | Memo: US$150; cross-chain or unsupported token: a fee on the recovered amount, rate not published | Cross-chain or unsupported token: above US$2,500 equivalent | No time limit; can take months |
| Pionex | Yes, Deposit Recovery Form | From 20 USDT, more for complex cases; paid as a separate transfer, not deducted from the recovered funds | Not offered if the deposit is worth less than the fee | Review 1 to 3 business days; return up to 60 business days |
| WEEX | No self-service entry published; ask support for manual recovery of a missing memo | Set after review; amount not published | Not published | Not published |
| XT.COM (archived 8 Oct 2025) | No, support ticket | Not published | Not published | Memo: returned within 2 weeks of verification; unlisted token: 1 to 2 weeks or longer |
| Ourbit | Yes, Wrong Deposit Return Application | Not fixed; refunded if the return proves impossible | Not published | Review 1 to 2 business days, return 3 to 22 business days, possibly longer |
XT.COM's help center would not load for this check, so its row comes from an archived copy. Gate's regional sites quote different amounts; the table uses the current page on the global site, gate.com. MEXC's 5 August 2026 help page says the fee is not fixed, while its form page updated on 23 October lists fixed amounts; the table uses the newer form page, and the minimum comes from the 5 August page.
The exchanges agree on three points:
- Recovery is not guaranteed. Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, KuCoin, Bitfinex, Pionex and Ourbit all say so.
- Recovered funds usually go back to the original sending address rather than into your account. Binance (for memo recovery), KuCoin, Bitget and Ourbit all say this.
- If you sent to an address that does not belong to the exchange, or to someone else's account, the exchange cannot help. Bitget, KuCoin, Pionex and XT.COM state this.
If it already happened
- Check the transaction. Look up the TxID on a block explorer and confirm it succeeded. Binance and KuCoin only accept requests for confirmed transactions, and Binance asks you to apply only if the funds still haven't arrived after an hour.
- Collect the details: TxID, network, token and amount, sending address, receiving address, memo, and screenshots of the withdrawal page and the deposit record. HTX asks for your UID, deposit address, a deposit screenshot, a screenshot of the successful withdrawal on the other platform, and the TxID. Bitfinex asks for the token name, deposit address, amount and TxID.
- Use the self-service entry first, then open a ticket. The table gives the name each exchange uses. Get there through the exchange's app or a URL you type yourself.
- Make sure the return address can receive. XT.COM asks that the return address not be a hot wallet, and Bybit's manual recovery requires an external, non-Bybit wallet. If the coins came out of another exchange, ask that exchange whether it can accept the refund.
- Don't wait. Bybit will not process memo recoveries for transactions older than 180 days. Pionex requires the request within 30 days of the transaction appearing on-chain. Bitfinex accepts delisted-token recoveries up to 2 months after withdrawals close.
- Read how the fee is taken. Binance charges only on success. Bybit does not refund the fee once charged. Ourbit refunds it if the return proves impossible. MEXC freezes the fee in your spot account on submission, and you cannot submit without enough balance. Pionex asks you to send the fee as a separate transfer.
- Watch out for fake support. Post about a lost deposit on social media and someone will usually message you offering to recover it for an upfront payment or your seed phrase. Only use the request channels inside the exchange's site or app. Never give anyone your seed phrase, private key or password. If you have to pay a fee by transfer, check the receiving address against the exchange's official help page first.
Pre-send checklist
Recovery takes days to months, costs money and may still fail. Treat a transfer like a deploy: do the checking before you send.
- Same network on both sides. The network you pick on the withdrawal page must exactly match the one listed on the receiving deposit page. OKX's advice: make sure your chosen network and address type match.
- If there is a memo field, fill it. When the deposit page shows an address and a memo, copy both from that same page. Don't make one up or reuse an old one.
- Deposits open, amount above the minimum. Gate and HTX both say deposits below the minimum are not credited.
- Matching contract. If the receiving deposit page lists a contract address, check it is the one you are sending. The contract address is only for checking; never send funds to it.
- Send a small test to new addresses. OKX's guide says to always send a small test withdrawal to a new address before moving a large amount.
- Turn on the withdrawal allowlist. OKX's allowlist limits withdrawals to addresses in your address book, and an optional lock keeps newly added addresses unusable for 24 hours.
FAQ
Can I recover USDT sent to Binance on the wrong network? It depends on the network. For an EVM network Binance doesn't support, you can apply through self-service recovery: 20 USDT, about 30 working days, charged only if it succeeds. For other unsupported networks, Binance says the assets might be lost and cannot be recovered.
My OKX deposit hasn't arrived. What now? First check whether deposits on that network are suspended; OKX processes assets already on-chain once the network reopens. If not, use the deposit self-service tool. For a missing tag or memo, contact support, starting with the AI chatbot.
Is a missing memo always recoverable? No. Most exchanges have a memo recovery process, but a memo that belongs to someone else is a different case: Ourbit says it cannot help, and Bybit says the funds may already have been credited to that memo's account and asks you to file a separate form.
What if the amount is below the minimum deposit? Gate says it will not be credited and cannot be recovered. BingX asks you to make another deposit above the minimum, in the same coin on the same chain, within 3 months, and credits the earlier one with it. OKX supports recovery of below-minimum deposits only for some coins, with an extra fee.
